Fifteen or so years ago, NBA video basketball game were a rare thing. College games were even rarer. The NCAA did not allow real players to be included in a game so development of college video basketball game just did not happen.
NCAA Basketball on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System was one of the first major games published. The game incorporated a quasi 3D design for its visuals which looked a bit weird. Next came NCAA Final Four by Mindscape. But this game suffered due to poor gameplay and was not a big seller. Based on the EA NBA Live game engine, EA produced Coach K College Basketball. Featuring only 32 teams, this video basketball game was nonetheless a game breaker. All teams were the big ones of the era. They played in a huge season and post-season scenario. This game turned out to be one of the most iconic and popular basketball that the game consoles ever had. Gameplay accurately resembled the wide open play of college ball compared to the hard hitting NBA style. Sony brought out the first college video basketball game that featured all 300+ division 1 teams. This game , Final Four and the EA entry were really the only two games to battle it out although Final Four was found to be overly easy to play. Sony caved after Final Four 2001 due to poor game play. This left EA as the only player in the market which did nothing for game improvements. EA had no real competition until Sega hit the market with their video basketball game NCAA Basketball 2K3. Featuring every college team, it also had a Legacy mode which game you a number of different options in your game play. After Sega entered the mix, EA started to improve March Madness at a rapid pace, providing perhaps a more exciting experience in game play. You now have a ‘Court General’ control that enables you to call plays and change strategies on the fly. Now you continued improvement in dribbling, passing, driving the lane and you can now do online with the major games. And now with the Wii, the sky seems to be the limit. |
