Basketball Manager

First released in 2003 and released yearly since then, this video basketball game is not your typical run and shoot basketball game. It is a basketball strategy game. As such you do not control individual players, rather you build the team using various techniques including trading/buying players.

The game includes teams from around the world including the NBA. The game database is now maintained by its fans and includes almost 10,000 players, almost 700 teams with over 1,000 managers from 194 countries. It takes a small army of researchers to make sure all the data is updated and available for download.

The game is essentially similar to most management games such as for soccer. It can be both single player or multi-player, playing against other players from around the world – over 500 at a time. Managers (the user) can manage both a club team and the national team at the same time should they be offered the job.

When you play the game for the first time, you have to create your manager profile and then be ‘hired’ by a club. You then control every aspect of club activities from medical and training to the starting lineup, transfers and creating strategy to counteract your opposing manager. The managers do not operate in a vacuum though. They will receive feedback from all those interested in the club – the administration, players, the press and of course the fans.

Players are rated according to 36 different attributes while the teams are based on 21 attributes. World Basketball Manager as a video basketball game was developed in Greece by a small development team. At first only including the Greek basketball league, the second version of the game released the following year added five more countries. The latest version is now available in nine languages.

While not being able to achieve worldwide distribution, the games fan base is extremely loyal. This enables the game to develop and to do more than just survive
